Entry and residence regualtions
The Austrian entry and residence regulations concerning the rights and status of foreigners are strictly enforced. The sections below provide clear guidance with regard to visa, registration and residence permit requirements.
Information for Nationals of EU/EEA Countries
Nationals of the European Union (EU), of the European Economic Area (EEA) Countries, who fulfill the requirements of sufficient financial means and proof of health insurance valid in Austria do not need a visa, and enjoy freedom of establishment (=Niederlassungsfreiheit). For entry into Austria and residence, they only need a valid travel document (passport or identity card). The travel document must be carried at all times to prove one’s entitlement to residence in Austria.
After arriving in Austria nevertheless you are obliged:
- to register with the respective authority (Gemeinde) within three days of establishing your residence.
- to report to the district administrative authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft) within four months to receive a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung)
